Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra - Encounter Ensembles

Besides the world class MPO, Dewan Filharmonik Petronas (DFP) plays host to many other wonderful ensembles, all home grown and led as well as directed by members of the MPO. A new orchestra for this season, the Encounter Training Orchestra is the stepping stone to all other specialist ensembles including the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO).

Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra

In just five short years, Encounter’s flagship ensemble, the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO) has established itself as one of the leading national youth orchestras in the Asia- Pacific region. Under the guidance of Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor, Kevin Field, the MPYO receives coaching from members of the MPO whilst touring and performing a variety of genres from established seminal classics to contemporary and popular music.

High Winds Ensemble
Founded in 2004, the High Winds Ensemble is made up of 11 musicians with the occasional trumpeter and drummer. This group was originally formed to perform at the annual Musical Jamboree, but it has gone on to perform in schools, hospitals, community centres, and even for diplomatic and cultural events. The High Winds Ensemble is led by MPO’s co-principal oboist, Joost Flach.

Encounter Training Orchestra

The Encounter Training Orchestra (ETO) is a new, twice monthly ensemble that rehearses and performs at DFP. With a variety of guest conductors, the ETO is the perfect start for both the novice and intermediate musicians to gain a sustained orchestral experience where the emphasis is on the rudimentary skills required to play in such an ensemble, for example; developing individual techniques, listening to others and sharing the same goal: a final performance to remember!

Encounter String Programme
There is a variety of specialised coaching offered here for those who have emerged through the Instrumental Lesson Programme or the Encounter Training Orchestra. Under the guidance of the MPO musicians, the Encounter String Programme includes String Quartet, String Ensemble, Junior Violin Programme, Junior String Ensemble and Cello Ensemble.
