AGE OF ELEGANCE

Forgotten Glories
Sat , 8.30pm

Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra
Paul Goodwin
 conductor
Lin Jiang horn

KOZELUCH: Symphony in G minor
HAYDN: Horn Concerto No.2 in D
ARNE: Overture and March from “Alfred”
MOZART: Symphony No.25 in G minor

Once renowned across Europe as a pianist and composer, the Czech composer Leopold Koželuch has all but faded into obscurity while, were it not for his famous tune "Rule Britannia", most of us would have forgotten all about Thomas Arne. Do they, like Haydn's little-known Horn Concerto and Mozart's "other" G minor Symphony really deserve that obscurity? English early-music specialist, Paul Goodwin, will prove otherwise.

Parting Thoughts
Sat , 8.30pm

Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra
Claus Peter Flor
 conductor
Xavier de Maistre harp

MOZART: Serenade in D – "Serenata Notturna"
HAYDN: Harp Concerto in D major, Hob. XVIII:11
BOIELDIEU: Harp Concerto
HAYDN: Symphony No.45 – “Farewell”

We say farewell to graduating students in the class of 1775 in Mozart's graceful Serenade, and to an entire orchestra in Haydn's most famously witty symphony. Meantime, we say welcome to French harpist Xavier de Maistre who has set out to "change the image of the harp". Hear his very masculine approach to this most feminine of instruments in two classic 19th century concertos.
