Writing of the Canadian-born French cellist's Proms debut, the Daily Telegraph observed; "Hearing Jean-Guihen Queyras is always a treat". There is even more of treat in store at this concert, for he is performing one of the greatest of all cello concertos, full of Dvorak's nostalgic thoughts for his homeland. Elgar, too, oozes nostalgia for the heady days of the British Empire in his magnificent Symphony.

BRITTEN: Sinfonia da Requiem
BRUCKNER: Symphony No.9

Bruckner left his ninth and final symphony incomplete at his death, but it stands today as one of the masterpieces of the late 19th-century symphonic repertoire. When the Japanese government rejected Britten's only symphony in 1940, little did they know that they were turning down the music of a composer who was to dominate English music in the 20th century.

GRIEG: Piano Concerto
TCHAIKOVSKY: Manfred Symphony

Tchaikovsky expected his symphony inspired by Byron's epic to be performed "once every 10 years". The MPO last performed it in 1999, so the return of this rich romantic treasure is more than welcome. As is the return of pianist Alice Sara Ott who performs one of the three or four most popular piano concertos in the world; although it as not been heard in DFP since 2002.

BRAHMS: Piano Concerto No.1
SHOSTAKOVICH: Symphony No.15

When Shostakovich's final symphony was premiered in 1972, many thought they were witnessing the end of the great symphonic tradition; they weren't, but the Symphony represents some sense of parting in its happy inclusion of all manner of themes taken from earlier works. Brahms desperately wanted to write a symphony, but his first attempt changed into a Piano Concerto and, as such, has enriched the genre with a work of rare grandeur and eloquence.
