Between them Hitler and Stalin represent the worst in 20th century political leaders. They are linked in Shostakovich's war-time Symphony, an attempt to show optimism in the face of the most horrible adversity. Meanwhile Prokofiev was busy travelling through north Africa and southern Europe as he wrote his Second Violin Concerto, which colourfully evokes many of the sounds he experienced on his travels abroad.

Welcoming home Malaysia's own star pianist in Gershwin's famous Rhapsody in Blue. Costa-Rican maestro Giancarlo Guerrero, Musical Director of the Nashville Symphony, leads the MPO in other Gershwin hits – An American in Paris, and the suite from Porgy and Bess. A spectacular all-American evening!

Singapore Symphony Orchestra Music Director, Lan Shui, and star Chinese violinist, Cho-Liang Lin, take us on a journey through their homeland in music inspired by Chinese folk legends. Besides the ever-popular "Butterfly Lovers" Concerto, we have the Malaysian premiere of Tan Dun's Concerto, jointly commissioned in 2009 by the SSO and the Juilliard School in New York.

With his own death fast approaching – the doctors had given him just weeks to live – Mahler summed up his innermost feelings on life and death in what was to be the last symphony he was ever to complete. While Alban Berg suggested that the first movement "is permeated with the premonition of death", this is far from a morbid work and makes a brilliant showcase for a large and able orchestra; ideal, in other words, for the MPO under Claus Peter Flor.
