Beethoven’s visceral 7th Symphony embodies human resilience in the face of adversity, with the melancholic yet uplifting Allegretto movement at the heart of some of Beethoven’s most memorable writing. Composed for string orchestra and bell, Arvo Pärt’s mesmerizing Cantus is a tribute to British composer Benjamin Britten, inspired by the serenity of early chant music. Gerard Salonga conducts.
